Motherhood with Yoga Instructor, Roxanne Gan: Overcoming negative postpartum body image & finding balance

As we all know, being a Mum isn’t easy, we are excited to bring you a 3-part series of interviews with our @thecleanaddicts Ambassadors who had a baby last year.

We hope that through these stories, they will give you strength and encouragement if you’re going to be a Mum or am already one!

In this part 2/3 feature, we catch up with Yoga instructor, @roxannegan_ on her thoughts on Motherhood after having her daughter Mila, body image advice (which I personally look up to her for). Plus what she's up to right now with her new role in the wellness industry!

What is something you learned that you wish someone had told you?

Everybody’s pregnancy and postpartum journey is different and what works for someone else might possibly not work for you. But one thing that I wished I had done earlier was establish a routine for Mila after she was born. She was such a overtired and colicky baby for 4 months and was crying so much. I wished someone had told me this!

how do you BALANCE family time & work with a baby?

Going back to work aka teaching is probably one of the best decisions I’ve made. I enjoy teaching and I’m still really passionate about it. Taking morning walks with Mila has been my main form of exercise, doing CrossFit once a week too. I feel physically stronger everytime after a workout and I can safely say that I really do feel good, inside out.
Also I’m so thankful for having such a hands-on husband; he gives me the space and time to pursue my interest while he takes care of Mila when I’m not around.

What is the most fulfilling thing after having Mila?

When she looks at us, recognises us, acknowledges us, and smiles. Her smile is priceless. I have never experienced so much love in my life. I just feel like I can only continue to love, more and more.

"I know it’s easy to say but really, be kind to yourself. It takes 9 months to make a baby, it’s gonna take time for your body to recover.

what are 3 tips for moms who struggle with negative postpartum body image?

1. I know it’s easy to say but really, be kind to yourself. It takes 9 months to make a baby, it’s gonna take time for your body to recover.
2. Yes you still look pregnant after birth. It takes approximately 6 weeks for our uterus to shrink. In the meantime, focus on nourishing your body for lactation and recovery. Lots of tonic, soups and nutritious food.
3. You don’t have to go to the gym to lose your pregnancy weight. Start slow and easy with walking your baby! A little goes a long way. Walking is easy on your bodies, a great way to spend time with your babies and stay active at the same time!

How has your yoga journey evolved after being a mum?

I am still teaching yoga but just a couple of classes a week because my priority now is spending as much time with Mila as I can. In short, my main responsibility and focus is still being a mom!

In terms of my practice, it’s mainly stretching and breathing exercises to help me relax and de-stress.

WHAT ARE YOU UP TO RIGHT NOW? I HEARD THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN UP A NEW ROLE. CONGRATS!

Thank you! I have even going with the flow for the past 2 years, but now that Mila is a little older it’s great to set new goals. I just embarked on my new role as the Yoga Program Manager of Como Shambhala (Sg) so that’s pretty exciting for me.

I get to teach, work with an amazing team of instructors to continue sharing the benefits of Yoga!
